Italian women protest against Berlusconi’s machism

The contraceptive pill and the myth of weight gain

January 21, 2011.- According to research conducted in the United States, “The myth that the pill causes weight gain in women who consume it, is wrong.”

This study by scientists at the University of Oregon Health and Science was published in Human Reproduction journal, and indicates that “although this issue is of great concern to women, so far it was not been able to obtain evidence to demonstrate whether these drugs cause weight gain or loss.”

According to the scientists, “This research was conducted during a year with a group of rhesus macaque monkeys because their reproductive system is almost identical to humans and with them, unlike human volunteers, it is possible to control and measure more variables, such as food consumption and physical activity. Half of the animals were obese and half were normal weight.”

Contraceptive treatment lasted eight months and was given similar doses of oral contraceptives at the doses that are prescribed to women.

The scientists kept track of their body weight, food intake, activity levels, body fat and muscle mass.

And according to the results, “the study showed that the normal weight group continued to maintain a stable weight, but the group of obese animals lost a significant amount of weight (8.5%) and fat percentage (12%) due to an increase in basal metabolism (the daily energy expenditure). “

Besides the specialists “did not observe changes in food intake, activity or muscle mass in any of the two groups.”

Dr. Judy Cameron, OB / GYN was the leader of the study and he said, ‘This study suggests worries about weight gain with pill use appear to be based more on fiction than on fact. Additionally, there may be a differential effect depending on your starting weight – heavier individuals who keep their diet stable may see a weight loss with pill use.

‘Most likely, the reason why this belief continues to exist is that the weight gain that seems to occur with age is being attributed to these medications.

‘We realise that research in non-human primates cannot entirely dismiss the connection between contraceptives and weight gain in humans but it strongly suggests that women should not be as worried as they previously were.’

“The ring is flexible, comfortable and discreet, as it is placed into the woman and removed only once a month. This eliminates the daily intake of a pill and possible oversights,” said Silvina Witis, gynecologist.

The ring that promises to end the reign of the pills is plastic, transparent, and placed as a buffer, and works the same way that contraceptives in pills, inhibiting ovulation. In addition, experts say that side effects are minor because it delivers a lower dose of hormones. A repeated criticism of the pills is that body weight increases as a result of hormonal changes.

It is manually placed and once inside the vagina, women don’t worry about it until next month.

Nuvaring will stay in the deepest area of the female sexual organ, a zone with few nerve endings, so the woman won’t even feel it.

Significantly, it is contraindicated in lactating women, so its use should be avoided in this process.

A study may reveal the perfect age for women to get pregnant

According to a study done in Tehran, now women are able to know the age limit to get pregnant.

The study will be presented tomorrow at the conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology. The study involves a blood test that measures the hormones produced by the ovaries.

“The results indicate that the anti-Müllerian hormone (produced by the ovaries) predicts the time at which menopause occurs even in young women,” said Dr. Fahimeh Ramezani Tehrani, one of the coordinators of the research. That hormone levels control the development of cells in the ovaries.

The levels of this hormone are different for each woman and vary according to age, however, no data was sufficient to make predictions.

The test developed by Tehrani, who works in the Endocrine Research Center of Tehran, should be subjected yet to a larger scale tests before a possible approval.

Woman was fired from Citigroup because of her sexy clothes

A New York woman sued Citigroup because apparently she was fired for the way she dresses and because she called the attention.

Debrahlee Lorenzana said her clothes were appropriate for her work environment, but their heads held that it was too sexy, according Village Voice magazine.

It appears that bank managers had been given a list of items that could not be used as costumes too tight or too high heels.

The dispute began in December 2009 and her appearance would have been discussed with the Human Resources department at Citigroup before she was fired.

It is not the first case of its kind, which is facing one of the largest U.S. institutions, as well as many other conflicts over motherhood, as some women claim they were fired after becoming pregnant.

Women often feel that they are discriminated and they did not run with the same opportunities as men in the workplace. In fact, during the financial crisis, they have been the first to lose their jobs.

Menu diets, more effective than group food ones

A study over 525 patients shows that balanced menus diets are generally more successful than those made by food groups.

The investigation made in Albacete, Spain, and published in the ‘National Food Conference 2010′ in the General Council of Pharmacists, in Seville, says that menu-diets (those where meals can be mixed) usually get a higher adhesion and thus a greater weight loss.

However, diets made by food groups (those which, for example, carbohydrates with proteins cannot be mixed), don’t get adhesion, and in addition they do not extend further in time.

The 525 patients were subjected to the same pharmacy to a hypocaloric diet for weight loss, and were divided into groups by menu diet and other for food goups diet.
