A 18 months old child feeds directly from a cow as her mother went to seek work in Thailand because a storm destroyed the family home in Cambodia.

The grandfather of the boy Tha Sophat revealed that “when his grandson had to stop breastfeeding, he got sick.

The boy saw a calf feeding from his mother and began to do the same, and now he do it directly from the cow every day.

When the grandfather tried to prevent it, the child cried so he allowed him to continue.

According to the grandfather, “His health is fine, he is strong and does not have diarrhea,” and on Saturday, limited breast-feeding once a day.

Tricks to lose weight effortlessly are few and very specific. A study published in the British Medical Journal said that “people who eat fast and until being satisfied had a body mass index higher.

Using a smaller fork helps you lose weight. A study by the Consumer Research Journal said “Those who eat with a fork about 20% smaller than normal eat less than those who do it with a regular sized.

Drinking water before meals helps increase the feeling of satiety. This practice can help us feel satisfied before meals. Experts from the University of Virginia found that “two glasses of water, three times daily before meals makes it lose several kilos.”

Eat in a common dish means that there will be more meal on it. Scientists from Cornell University in New York state that “if you put the same amount of food on a plate large and small, the larger will be empty and tend to accumulate more food in it by the thought of you’re eating little.

A person does not loose weigh avoiding some of the meals. The researchers maintain that “this is not a waste of calories or even lose weight.”

It is necessary to chew food properly as it helps to slow down eating and thus helps the stomach to digest food and to have earlier feeling of fullness.

When you are hungry do not buy food because “you think of anything but eat healthy.” Therefore, it is important not to go to the grocery store when not eaten yet, because the temptation is strong to buy products that are not needed.

Try not to buy large containers of food, because we are not aware of how much we eat. Experts recommend that “it’s best individual bags and packages to better control the amount of food you eat.”

Ecstasy could be used to treat blood cancers and could help with leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

The researchers found, about six years ago, that “cancers affecting the white blood cells respond to psychotropic drugs, including ecstasy, weight loss pills and antidepressants”.

Experts from the University of Birmingham adapted “ecstasy to be used, which gave as a result that it is one hundred times more effective against cancer cells than other common drugs”.

David Grant, who helps with the investigation, and a Ph.D. from the charity Research The Leukemia & Lymphoma, said that “the possibility of treating blood cancer with a drug derived from ecstasy is exciting. It is an important step”.

John Gordon, professor at the college of Immunology and Infections, said, “is an exciting step, the results show potential for treatment improvements in the upcoming years”.

He further clarified that “scientists worked hard to adapt ecstasy. The research showed that the dose needed to treat a tumor was fatal, so they had to insulate their properties against cancer”.

Gordon declared for the Investigational New Drugs newspaper that “his team is looking for ways to help MDMA molecules penetrate the walls of cancer cells more easily”.

Fifteen minutes of daily exercise reduce the death risk in 14% and increase the life expectation in three years.

“The Lancet” magazine published the study made with more than 400.000 people, who were controlled during an average of eight years and the objective was find out if a level exercise minor to 150 minutes per week recommended could have benefits for health.

The researches headed by Dr. Chi-Pang Wen from the Taiwan Health Research of National Institute and Jackson Pui Man Wai from the Taiwan Sport National University said if inactive people practice a little bit of exercise every day one of six deaths could be prevented.

And if they practice more exercise more is the benefit on health and this continue when a person is in activity until 100 minutes.

A group of scientist warned yesterday that “women who smoke have a 25% higher risk of developing cardiac disease in comparison with men who smoke”.

The finding was held after 86 international studies which involved 2.4 million people and showed that the health of women is more affected by tobacco addiction.

The research, published online, explains how is it that the female gender is far more affected by smoking.

“For example, women might extract a greater quantity of carcinogens and other toxic agents from the same number of cigarettes than men”, it reads.

“This occurrence could explain why women who smoke have double the risk of lung cancer compared with their male counterparts”.

The World Heath Organization (WHO) said that go to a hospital is riskier than take a plane. Million of people die every year due to medial mistakes and infections caught in medial centers”.

WHO Envoy for Patient Safety Liam Donaldson said “If you were admitted to hospital tomorrow in any country, your chances of being subjected to an error in your care would be something like 1 in 10. Your chances of dying due to an error in health care would be 1 in 300.”

“You are much less likely to die in a plane crash, where the risk is approximately 1 in 10 million. Liam Donaldson used to be England’s chief medical officer. He said that health care generally around the world still has a long way to go”, he added.

A group of American specialists from the University of California Davis did a new study on masculine infertility. They would have found the cause for it.

In its research, they proved that “the mutation of a gene of a sperm protein may be the why of the infertility problems of men”.

The investigation was centred in “a protein that covers the sperm and allows them to move faster towards the egg to fertilize it, which may explain why certain men are more infertile than others”.

The report alerts that “one fourth of all masculine population carries this defective gene”.

As confirmed by a group of Australian scientists, “Botox, the botulinum toxin type A used to stretch the wrinkles and facial lines by relaxing the muscles, could be a beneficial treatment for patients with asthma.”

Experts at the Medical Centre at Monash University in Melbourne, consider that “the substance can counteract the muscle spasms that cause the disease which appears in the larynx.”

Also note that “the patient can help improve symptoms of asthma. This chronic condition is characterized by recurrent attacks with shortness of breath or wheezing. And the severity and frequency of the disorder varies from person to person. During an asthma attack, the lining of the bronchial tubes becomes inflamed and causes a narrowing of the airways, which reduces the airflow into and out of the lungs. “

June 26, 2011:

According to the Daily Mail, “Women who work sitting for more than forty hours a week have a 40% risk of dying than those who only spend three hours working sitting during the day, according to a study done by the American Cancer Association”.

The study was conducted among 123.000 persons of more than 14 years old, among which 20% consisted of men and concluded that “Women who work sitting more than forty hours a week are at risk of having a shorter life”.

Sitting for long periods of time increases the risk of cardiovascular problems, diabetes, depression and obesity and those who work behind a desk also have the risk of colon cancer.

These people’s risk increases if they are also smokers.

Some companies are already aware of the risk and try to fight health problems with tapes that workers can run and more ergonomic desks.

But experts assured that “this is only harmful if done in long term”.

Researchers at the University of East Anglia conducted studies and found that “Some medications used for common diseases are being associated with an increased risk of dementia or death in elderly patients.”

The research was conducted with more than 13 000 people over 65 years old.

They found that “Almost half were taking a group of drugs known as anticholinergic used to treat diseases such as asthma, cystitis, depression and epilepsy. Those who took the strongest dose of the drug had an increased risk of mental deterioration and death.”

Experts state that “patients should not panic or stop taking their medicine. It is need constant monitoring if they are using anticholinergic a long time.

There was great controversy over a documentary about assisted suicide after BBC broadcast in prime time the last hours of billionaire Peter Smedley, 71, when he consumed a lethal dose of drugs to end his life after being affected by motor neurone disease.

BBC documentary was entitled “Choosing to die,” directed by Terry Pratchett and begins with the story about the life of British billionaire who wants to leave the UK to travel to Dignitas clinic in Switzerland where he will end his life .

Peter Smedley said, “My condition deteriorated to the point where I need to leave pretty soon.”

The documentary recounts his last trip to the center where ingested a dose of Nembutal with the help of chocolate.

The documentary is seen as Smedley breathing with difficulty and said goodbye to his wife Christine, who accompanied him at all times.

A medical center employee said while the billionaire was dying, “he is losing consciousness. Shortly breathing will stop and then the heart.”

Finally, a voiceover states that “This was a happy event. He died peacefully in the arms of his wife.”

A group of scientists at Yale University discovered by chance that nicotine stimulates a group of neurons that suppresses appetite.

The scientists published in the journal ‘Science’, “Nicotine stimulates a group of neurons in the brain region called the hypothalamus, which are responsible for notifying the body that already had enough and are happy.”

Professor Marina Picciotto said, “Unfortunately, smoking helps to prevent weight gain.” “We want to help people maintain their weight once they quit, and may help non-smokers who are struggling with obesity.”

She further explained that the discovered was fortuitous, when they were analyzing the effect of a potential drug for depression that acts on a group of receptors on the surface of neurons.

These receptors, called nicotinic receptors, have many functions. One of these is being the target of nicotine in the brain. When testing the experimental drug in mice, scientists noticed that the treated animals ate less than those not receiving the drug.”

Experts at the University of Michigan presented a simple mental exercise that increases the ability to reason and solve new problems.

It is called the “n-back training” and people have to remember the positions of a figure that moves in cycles on a screen.

Researchers say that the practice of this exercise for 20 minutes a day over 20 days, improves outcomes in an intelligence test.

The advantages of this mental training were presented at the Association for Psychological Science in Washington by one of those responsible for research, psychologist John Jonides, who collaborated with colleagues from the Universities of Bern and Taipei.

June 2, 2011.- The World Health Organization confirmed the existence of two mutations of the bacterium Escherichia coli, which has killed 17 people in Germany and one in Sweden.

The new strains could explain the aggression who suffered the victims as experts said they are more resistant to antibiotics and cling to the intestine for longer. They also have the capacity to generate more toxins. Apparently these mutations are from the combination of two different bacteria: E. coli O104, identified in 2005 in Korea, which contributes 80% of the genes and another that is responsible for producing very harmful toxins.

While scientists have succeeded in detecting these mutations, the cures will not come in the short term as to produce new drugs will require considerable time. Therefore, the prognosis of the health authorities is not very encouraging in Europe, since they suspect that there are thousands of people who are incubating the bacteria, so the number of hospitalizations could increase with every passing day as the killings.

June 2, 2011: An unknown source has caused the outbreak of the cucumbers contaminated with the bacterium E. coli.

The European Commission raised ‘health warning against Spanish products for having not found evidence that they were the cause of the epidemic, but authorities are still looking for the true source of the outbreak that each day extends out of control and that have created about 17 dead and more than 1,500 people affected, including several in serious condition in nine countries.”

The European Commission said in a statement that “The latest results of tests on samples of cucumbers, carried out by competent authorities, showed that the Spanish vegetable is not responsible for the outbreak affecting Germany and other Member States.”

According to the authorities of the World Health Organization (WHO), “Scientific analysis of the bacterium E. coli, responsible for an outbreak that left 17 people dead in Europe indicate that it is a strain that was not detected before. ”
According to WHO experts, “the strain is a mutant form of two different types of bacteria E. coli is lethal genes, which could explain why the outbreak in Europe is so virulent. So far, 1,500 people were infected with the bacteria. ”
British authorities reported that “On Thursday, 3 new cases detected, and to date a total of 7 affected in the country.”

The World Health Organization says graphic pictures on cigarette packages are effective in getting people to quit smoking. As part of the commemoration Sunday of this year’s World No Tobacco Day, the WHO is launching a campaign to decrease tobacco use by increasing public awareness of its dangers.

The Director of WHO’s Tobacco Free Initiative, Douglas Bettcher, says there is clear evidence that this type of packaging is effective.

“The use of candid, often shocking pictures is one of the most exciting, cost-effective and effective trends in tobacco-control today,” said Douglas Bettcher. “It is a positive form of globalization for public health. Although some people question the need for such pictures, the evidence is absolutely clear that they convince people to quit.”

And, that evidence, says Bettcher, comes from Canada, which eight years ago took the revolutionary step of becoming the first country to require bold, graphic health warnings and pictures on cigarette packs.Today, more than 20 countries, with a combined population of nearly 700 million require these picture health warnings. Four other countries will put them into place between now and next year,” added Douglas Bettcher. “Yet, only 10 percent of the world’s population yet lives in countries where these effective warnings exist.”

Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death.  The World Health Organization reports more than five million people die every year from tobacco-related causes, such as, cancer, heart disease and stroke.  And most of these deaths occur in poor, developing countries.

WHO says some of the most effective interventions for reducing tobacco use include banning smoking in all public places and work places, banning tobacco advertising and sponsorship, and raising taxes and prices on a pack of cigarettes.

May 10, 2011.- A U.S. investigation found that “Gay men have a higher prevalence of cancer than heterosexual men.

The study involved over 122 000 people in California, and also it was found that lesbians and bisexual women have a poorer health after suffering from the disease than heterosexual women.”

The Journal of the American Cancer Society published the study and analyzed data from the California Health Surveys 2001, 2003 and 2005, in which 3,690 men and 7,252 women reported having been diagnosed with cancer at some point in their life.

From the 122,345 respondents 1,493 men and 918 women described themselves as homosexual, while 1,115 women reported being bisexual.

It was found that homosexual men were twice as likely as heterosexuals to have been diagnosed with cancer.

And, on average, the disease had occurred in the previous decade.

Among women there was no such link.

The researchers speculate that “the difference in the numbers of cancer survivors may be due to a higher rate of anal cancer in gay men or HIV infection, which has been linked to the disease.”

Clinical director of HIV and sexual health of the UK’s Terrence Higgins Trust Jason Warriner said: “We know that HIV can cause certain types of cancer, and that homosexuals are at greater risk of virus infection than heterosexuals.”

“Another factor which could potentially have an impact is the human papilloma virus (HPV), which can lead to anal cancer in homosexual men.”

Jason Warriner says that “we believe that recent figures on oral and anal cancer justify reconsider whether protection programs should be extended to include also children.”

Argentina, May 9, 2011

The National Food, Drug and Medical Technology (ANMAT) prohibited the marketing of electronic cigarette around the country.

The coordinator of the National Programme for Control of Snuff, Mario Virgolini, said: “Some argue why prohibit this and not prohibit the common cigarette. We explained that if both were emergent elements we would ban them both, but tobacco is already installed in society and the efforts to eradicate it will have to be more gradual, as plainly banning it would only generate black market.”

As published in the Official Gazette, the import, marketing, distribution, advertising and / or any other form of promotion in Argentina of the electronic cigarette (the electrical system of administration of nicotine) is now forbidden.

Last year, the ANMAT had “discouraged its use,” arguing that “smoking devices have not been presented to date scientific evidence of its efficacy and safety.”

Argentina, May 5, 2011

Yesterday, hundreds of people with celiac disease had gathered near the Congress to take on another day of struggle. The National Celiac Act had been passed two years ago, but it did not have the necessary regulations.

Silvia Moreno de Caceres, of the Celiac Foundation (Fundacel), stated: “Our only possible treatment is to eat food free of TACC (wheat, oats, barley and rye, in Spanish). That’s why we need social insurance from the state and the companies to consider that our food is medicine.”

“The biggest problem is that the cost of meals becomes 10 times greater than that of common foods”, he added.

Fortunately, President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner ruled the 26,588 law which declares of national interest the investigation and treatment of the disease, and the distribution of gluten-free food.

“So we decided to replace the black balloons were going to drop at the beginning for some with colors,” the protesters indicated yesterday.

April 24, 2011

High blood pressure was always related to heart diseases, cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) and a lower life expectancy, and even some scientists claimed that coffee could increase the problem.

But according to a report in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” Those who drink a lot coffee a day have the same problems than the ones that consume less often. The data was collected over 170 000 people, one every five people suffer from hypertension, there was no difference between those who drink too much coffee a day and those who do not consume it”.

The scientist Liwei Chem from the University of Louisiana, said that “the relationship between coffee drinking and hypertension is unsubstantiated. The results suggest that regular consumption of more than three cups of coffee per day was not associated with an increased risk of hypertension”.

He further clarified that “more data is needed to draw a definitive conclusion on the issue, since the study is not saying there is no risk to drink lots of coffee. In addition, people who drink one to three cups per day had a slightly increased risk of high blood pressure than those who drink less, a result that the researchers could not explain”.

Lawrence Krakoff, a professor at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York said “I do not think that drinking coffee is a risk factor for developing hypertension,” but “if you drink 12 cups of coffee a day and you cannot sleep it does have a problem”.

April 20, 2011.- According to new research reported on HIV, “one in eight children may develop resistance to the three main types of drugs created to contain the virus.”

The Lance, one of the leading medical journals in the world, published “The first study, a large scale, on immunity to the drugs that fight HIV in young people.”

The study was conducted over one thousand children in Europe.

Specialists who participated in the investigation called for new types of medicines to be developed specifically for children.

Because the drugs used in HIV patients help keep the virus at a low level, which slows the weakening of the immune system and aids in recovery from damage caused by HIV.

April 13, 2011.- According to scientists from Florida State University (United States), “Apples are fruits truly ‘miraculous’ and not only for its high content of fiber.

“The pectin and polyphenols containing apples help protect cardiovascular health by lowering levels of bad cholesterol and other harmful compounds in the blood.”

Dr. Bahram Arjmandi of the Department of Nutrition at the University of Florida, who led the research, presented at the Experimental Biology Annual Meeting 2011, held in the U.S. capital, assured that “Animal studies led to evidence that pectin and polyphenols-antioxidants found in the skin of apples helps remove waste and toxins found in the body, improve lipid metabolism and reduce the production of inflammatory molecules associated with the risk of heart disease.”

Specialists working in research conducted a sample of 160 women between 45 and 65 years old, which were divided into two groups; half ate an apple a day (75 grams per day for one year) and the rest consumed raisins during the same period of time.

After blood tests at three, six and twelve months, according Arjamandi, it was found “incredible changes in cholesterol levels after six months of eating an apple a day.”

Moreover, the doctor said that “Cholesterol low density lipoprotein (LDL), known as bad cholesterol fell by 23% in women who ate apples, and increased 4% cholesterol high density lipoprotein (HDL) or ‘good’ cholesterol. I never thought that eating apples the level of bad cholesterol will reduce while increasing the good one.”

“Daily consumption of an apple also helped patients lose weight. Despite ingesting extra 240 calories a day they lost an average of 1.4 kilos, thanks to the effect of pectin. Weight reduction is an added benefit to the daily consumption of apples. It’s like the ‘miracle fruit’.”

April 7, 2011: M24 Digital would not be absent in this very important day for humanity, because it is specifically about the health of every one of us.

The World Health Day was adopted as such on July 22, 1946 by the International Health Conference, convened by the Economic and Social Council in New York City, USA, to give high levels of health to most people.

WHO launched a global campaign to protect the “miracle drugs” for treating diseases a few decades ago, or even a few years for HIV / AIDS, which were then mortal, so today the World Health Organization launch a global campaign to protect these drugs for future generations.

The World Health Day this year is devoted to planning and health. The campaign highlights the effects on human health, life in cities and promotes initiatives to make them healthier places.

The urban lifestyle is a cost to health because the people have reduced physical activity and started consuming high-calorie processed foods and fewer fruits and vegetables.

Orthorexia and eating disorders http://m24digital.com/en/2011/03/23/orthorexia-and-eating-disorders/ http://m24digital.com/en/2011/03/23/orthorexia-and-eating-disorders/#comments Wed, 23 Mar 2011 16:25:33 +0000 RedactorR http://m24digital.com/en/?p=110152

March 23, 2011.- The removal of certain foods is attached to an obsession with exercise that makes those affected by this disorder weak and emaciated.

Orthorexia is a disorder that affects women and men around 30 years old. In most cases it begins following fad diets of celebrities like maple syrup, used by Naomi Campbell, or blood group, followed by Cheryl Cole. It is based on the belief that there are certain fattening foods more or less depending on your blood type.

The difference between orthorexia and other eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia, is that the goal is not necessarily lose weight, but those affected did it believing mistakenly that they are carrying a healthy lifestyle.

There are no very reliable figures on this disease, because it is a disorder that began in recent years as a real health problem.

British psychologist Deanne Jade explained to the Daily Mail, that “orthorexia is a hidden disorder that is disguised with the label of a healthy diet.”

“Often people who want to eat healthy are overwhelmed by conflicting information. They begin to eliminate food groups, such as meat or dairy, and are convinced that they are intolerant.”

“Eliminating certain foods from your diet such as meat or dairy products can cause calcium deficiency, protein, iron and essential nutrients to live.”

March 16, 2011.- French researchers discovered a powerful longevity gene in some worms, which may help humans fight aging-related diseases like cancer, osteoporosis and neurodegenerative processes.

Research director Hugo Aguilaniu explained to Efe, “The gene discovery is nhr-80, a ‘master gene’ that certain types of worms have and it transmits information to many other genes that protect.”

“The ‘overexpression’ of it in worm Caenorhabditis elegans lab (making more copies of this substance) prolongs life by up to 150% more than wild specimens.”

The nhr-80, as the human version is the NHS-4, is activated by a hormone that has not yet discovered and scientists try to identify. After locating the mysterious hormone, it is easier for experts to operate on it and try to extend the longevity of organisms, including humans.

According to the team of the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), from the School of Lyon and University Claude Bernard led by Aguilaniu, “is very likely to develop new applications to design drugs capable of fighting at once against a set of diseases associated with aging.”

March 9, 2011.- Nicotine levels in the nails can fairly accurately predict the risk that has a smoker and a nonsmoker exposed to secondhand smoke, to develop the disease in the future.

The study, conducted at the University of California, San Diego, found that “the toenails, which grow very slowly, provide a barometer of chronic exposure to tobacco snuff.”

The American Journal of Epidemiology published this investigation. Experts found that men with higher levels of nicotine in their toenails showed 3.5 times more likely to develop lung cancer than those with lower levels.

Nicotine levels in the nails are relatively stable, compared with the urine or saliva. This is because the nails grow very slowly, almost an inch a year.

Experts believe that “this finding could lead to new tests to detect lung tumors.”

Lead researcher, Professor Wael Al-Delaimy, said “Whether you are a smoker or a nonsmoker exposed to passive smoke snuff, we can now measure to better exposure to smoke and to predict their risk.”

“The toenails can be stored at room temperature for many years. And it may represent exposure to nicotine during the past year.”

During the study experts analyzed “toenails of 850 men in 1987 when the experiment began. The nails were analyzed to measure the levels of nicotine and scientists followed the participants for 12 years to see who developed lung cancer.”

The conclusion showed that “those who developed the disease had, at baseline, an average nicotine level of about 0.95 nanograms per milligram. But those who did not develop the tumor had only 0.25 ng per mg. In addition, over 10% of men with higher levels of nicotine had never smoked. This analysis reveals that some samples also have hidden risks of passive smoking.”

March 8, 2011

According to experts, “The love for technology disrupts the sleep pattern”.

According to a study done by the National Sleep Foundation in the United States “the constant use of electronic devices minutes before resting, can cause disturbances in sleep patterns”.

A U.S. survey found that “43% of people between 13 and 64 years old say they never or almost never sleep well at night during the week”.

“95% of people studied admitted using some type of electronic device such as TV, computer, video games or cell phone at least a few nights a week an hour before sleeping”.

“60% said that they have problems ever day when sleeping, such as waking up in the middle of the night or feel tired when they wake up”.

David Cloud, the executive director of the Foundation said: “While these technologies have become common, it is clear we have much to learn about appropriate use and design to complement good habits at bedtime”.

Charles Czeisler of Harvard Medical School confirmed that “exposure to artificial light that happens between dusk and the time we go to bed at night suppresses the release of melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep, enhances alertness and causes changes in our heart rate, making it harder to fall asleep”.

According to the study “Television is not only a weapon against sleeping. 61% reported using a laptop computer before bed, and nearly half said they surf the internet in the hour before the sleep”.

According to Cloud “Unfortunately, cell phones and computers, which make our lives more pleasant and productive, are also being used improperly to the point that contribute to sleep less”.

The survey was conducted by academics from six different colleges and interviewed more than 1,500 people.

According to the newspaper “The Sun” “Little Hannah, with only 28 weeks and one kilo was born with a problem in her little heart. The doctors were realistic and warned the parents that the girl had very little chances of surviving”.

Doctors discovered 20 weeks after she was born that Hannah had a heart problem because one of her veins was not developing properly and so it was sending large amounts of blood to the lungs.

According to the newspaper “Doctors at Southampton General Hospital decided to carry out a pioneering operation in two phases. When Hannah and her sister Lauren, were born in September, the doctors reduced the flow of blood from the baby. Months later, when little was strong enough to overcome a second operation, they cut the jugular vein of a cow and used it to reconstruct the pulmonary artery of the child”.

Now, little Hannah has five months and became the youngest baby in the UK to undergo an operation like this, and now she can return home any time.

Charlotte, the girl’s mother said to the newspaper that “It’s really amazing to think that we used the vein of a cow to keep our daughter alive”.

March 4, 2011.- According to a research published in the journal Neurology Journal, “People taking ibuprofen often have a lower risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.”

This medication usually is used to soothe aches and pains, but could have other added benefits.

In the study involving 135 000 people it was found that “those who often take ibuprofen were 40% less likely to develop Parkinson’s.”

Although experts believe that “it is too early to know whether the benefit of the drug outweigh the risks of other side effects such as gastrointestinal bleeding.”

Anti-inflammatory drugs could help protect against the disease, but it was unclear which substances of the family of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) contributed benefits. And the study suggests that ibuprofen only has this effect.”

However, “ibuprofen can cause troubling side effects such as increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.”

Also experts linked ibuprofen daily intake for several years “to a small increased risk of heart attack and stroke.”

The researchers believe that “more investigation is needed to determine whether the benefits of taking the drug more often or not exceed the risks. If the findings are positive, this could provide a new way to treat incurable neurological disease.”

This new technique will allow specialists to perform the procedure “through a CT scanner and a small incision in the neck of the deceased.”

Experts explain that “Through the incision, air and ink is injected to the heart, and they proceeds to make a detailed examination that will reveal whether or not there was any heart disease. The scanner also can detect signs of trauma, fractures and cancer.”

The scientists said that “non-invasive method could be more profitable and cause less suffering to the families than conventional autopsy.”

February 28, 2011.- Scientists in Scotland are trying to find a cure for amnesia, a condition that is increasing worldwide.

Research CPS specialists, a clinical research center in Glasgow, maintains that “people are becoming more forgetful as a result of our modern lifestyles and information overload.”

This condition, in medicine it is identified as “subjective cognitive impairment” (SCI).

Older people begin to forget things, like “where did I leave my keys?” And believe “is the first sign of Alzheimer’s. But it is not always.”

Experts said that “Being forgetful or delayed recall certain things is usually a normal process of aging.”

And “the objective of the study in Scotland, is to analyze why, even in young people, lapses of memory are becoming increasingly common,” labeled as “busy life syndrome.”

Scientists say that “forgetting, or being forgetful, can be caused by a hectic lifestyle or when we are constantly bombarded with information from cell phones, television, radio and Internet.”

According to CPS Research Dr Alan Wade “Forgetfulness is a normal process of aging, but we have anecdotal evidence that suggests it is now increasingly affecting younger people as a result of multiple occupations at home or work and excess information from the various media we consume today.”

“But we’re talking about something that should not be confused with a serious loss of memory, which itself may be related to presenile dementia.”

He explains, “This study is aimed at those who are constantly losing their keys, or forget the names of people, or lose the glasses. But no those who suffer from something more serious.”

The investigation is to study whether this type of amnesia can be treated with a small dose of a drug used to treat Alzheimer’s disease, memantine.

“A drug that is prescribed routinely to people who already have the disease, but it is believed that a lower dose may help fight SCI.”

February 24, 2011.- British twins were born prematurely at 26 weeks gestation and are small enough to put her arms around a wedding ring from their father. Now they are at home after weeks of treatment and care.

The two babies, Willow and Stanley, had respiratory problems and barely survived, even after many days of treatment and incubators, managed to move ahead and go home with their parents.

Mr Senior, 32, a business analyst for JP Morgan, said: ‘We knew we were expecting twins and there’s always a risk of being premature, but we weren’t overly worried.

‘It came completely out of the blue. Leela started having a bit of bleeding, so we went in for a check-up, but by the time we got there she was fully dilated.

‘Willow was born about 20 minutes later and Stanley arrived by caesarean in another 20 minutes.

February 22, 2011.- Georgia Davis became the first British teenager weigh 254 kilos with 17 years old.

The girl said weigh a quarter ton makes her feel so sad that she eats even more. “I try not to think about the possibility that I may die from being overweight, because if I do, I panic and that makes me binge eating, which worsens my problem.”

She added that “I removed the mirror in my room, but there is one in the bathroom where I see myself every morning when I brush my teeth, and that makes me feel very sad.” Georgia controls her weight on a scale designed for industrial materials.

The teenager spent 9 months in Wellspring, a camp for weight loss in the United States, making her weight down to 114 kilos, assisted by several specialists. But the small semi she shares with her poorly mum Lesley, and step-dad Arthur, 73, is a far cry from the cosy, mountain dormitory she called home in America.

Georgia explained that she followed a healthy eating program in which she had learned to enjoy eating low fat foods such as salads, yogurt and even buffalo meat.

“I was really determined and encouraged to continue with this diet when I returned home, but my mother told me that she had no time to prepare healthy food, so I went to eat ‘fish and chips’. From that moment, I knew things were not going well. “

“I even learned to like exercise, going to the gym and playing tennis and basketball. But at home you can do a few sports, and I have no money to sign up to the gym. So, I became much less flexible than before passing through the camp.”

Georgia with a defeatist attitude indicates that “The few times I go out and catch the bus to go downtown, people stare at me shocked. But I do not care what anyone thinks, I’m used to.”

His mother and stepfather do not help much to aid her to lose weight and make exercise. She is back to spending her days just sitting in her room on her laptop, chatting to friends on email and social-networking sites, eating cakes, chocolates, chips, bread and Coca-Cola.

Georgia finally confesses that “This is my problem and I know I have to figure it out myself, but I am human and I need a little support.”

According to the published by Dailymail.co.uk, “Noe Tomsett was being treated of multiple birth defects in the St George Hospital in London, when he contracted a deadly disease caused by an adenovirus and died”.

According to the autopsy, the child contracted the disease through the hands of the doctor. After these results, the doctors argued that it is ‘difficult’ to accomplish the urgent demands of the patient with the hands washed”.

The mother, Nicole Deutsch, and father, Brett Tomsett, blamed the hospital for not acting fast enough to protect their child.

The mother told to the “Evening Standard” that “everything took too long. The doctors did not do him a thorough checkup when she was born so they found no other problems until January”. “They did not do enough tests on me. Nobody has the answers. I was in the hospital all the time with him during the week”.

Brett, his father, added that “no one took responsibility for the case of Noah. We had to remember the story of Noah every two days”.

“I was hoping that the cause of her death was of natural reasons but it is a virus that can collapse at any time. There’s not clinical negligence in this regard”.

Dr. Martin Grey, a pediatrician at the hospital, said that “the virus that killed Noe was probably an infection spread by hand” and said that “he attended at least once a baby without washing their hands, because of the nature ‘hasty ‘health of the child. “

The medical examiner Shirley Radcliffe said Noe “received” excellent care and was “a tragedy” the way she acquired the virus”.

The report clarifies that “Noah was born at 39 weeks by Caesarean in September 2009. After a scan, it showed that she had a problem with her abdomen. She was treated and released in October but had to be readmitted in January 2010 when his doctor noticed that she was worsening. He was discharged again for several weeks but had to be re-admitted for respiratory problems on February 25. March 21, when finally died”.

February 11, 2011.- Daniel Meyer, 13, underwent surgery even before he was born to lessen the effects of spina bifida.

Daniel was in the womb when doctors made the intervention to reduce the effects of this disease.

According to experts, “this type of surgery reduces the neurological complications of babies and promotes their better development.”

In 1997, doctors at Vanderbilt University conducted an operation that “was intended to repair a defect of the spine.”

The babies, during surgery, remained in the womb, and now, thirteen years later, Daniel sees life differently because of an operation that changed his way of facing the world.

According to a study from the University of California, San Francisco, “babies who undergo surgery for spina bifida when they are still in the uterus, develop better and suffer less neurological complications than babies who undergo this surgery after birth.”

This study is the first to evaluate systematically the best treatment for myelomeningocele, the most severe form of spina bifida, in which the bones of the spine do not form completely.

The study shows that prenatal surgery greatly reduces the need to divert fluid from the brain, improves mental and motor function and increases the likelihood that a child might one day walk without help.

United States, February 10, 2011

Drinkers of diet soda had a nearly 50% increased risk of vascular events, suggested new data.

“[This study] was motivated by previous research that has suggested a relationship between diet and regular soda consumption and the metabolic syndrome which is an important risk factor for vascular events,” said Hannah Gardener, ScD, epidemiologist at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, and lead author of the study, in a press conference, later adding in an interview with CARDIOLOGY TODAY that she and fellow investigators “found a statistically significant increased risked of vascular events including stroke and heart attack among those who drank diet soda daily as compared with those who didn’t drink either diet or regular soda.”

According to a research published in Britain, “People that fear injections may feel less pain if they look when the needle enters their skin, rather than looking to other way”.

Specialists from University College in London established the relationship between pain and sight. The scientists applied heat to the hands of volunteers and they stopped when it became a painful experience for them and the conclusion was published in the journal Psychological Science, which states “The volunteers were able to tolerate more pain when they could see what was happening”.

According to scientists, the research helps to understand how the brain processes pain, which may help to develop treatments”.
