Vienna, Austria, September 6, 2011

A group of Austrian archaeologists found the remains of an ancient gladiatorial school 48 kilometers east of Vienna via satellite imagery.

The discovery has been called “sensational” because it is an important structure that even competes with the famous school for gladiators known as the Ludus Magnus, based in Rome.

The School of Vienna is part of a city that flourished 1,700 years ago as a prominent commercial and military point of the Roman Empire.

Although excavations didn’t begin yet, through satellite imagery, large murals can be seen surrounding 40 small cells where probably the fighters stood.

Also it was recognized a training area, bathrooms and a cemetery outside the walls, probably to those who died during training.

The gladiators were usually slaves or convicted criminals and they were exposed to these kinds of practices.

The Argentinean artist Francisco Solano Lopez, cartoonist of the comic “El Eternauta”, created by Hector Germán Oesterheld, died yesterday due to a stroke. His remains will not be veiled, and his body will be cremated by the family’s decision.

His career as an artist began in 1953 in the journal Misterix, then integrating the editorial staff of Oesterheld and where they created Rolo, The Martian Foster, Black Poppy, Joe Zonda, Rul of the Moon and El Eternauta, their most renewed comic.

“Oesterheld always liked science fiction. We had already done Rolo before the Eternauta and he felt like publishing a cartoon in that genre with Argentine heroes, at the same time realistic and science fiction” he said when asked about the origin of most famous character of the pair.

The Eternauta was first published in Hora Cero in 1957, reaching a total of 106 numbers. It was also reprinted on numerous occasions and recreated later with Alberto Breccia.

Between 1963 and 1968 he lived in Europe and painted Galaxus, Kelly Magic Eye, Eternal Adam and Prof. Kraken and then left for a time to draw in national magazines.

In 1976 he returned to the country and accepted the proposal of Oesterheld Editions to meet again and create a sequel to The Eternauta, published in the journal. Soon after, Oesterheld was kidnapped and Solano Lopez emigrated to Spain in 1977, where he make Slot Barr with his sons.

Argentina, July 26, 2011

Today will be inaugurated a artistic work made by the sculptor Alejandro Marmo and the painter Daniel Santoro of Eva Peron. The ceremony will take place on Avenida 9 de Julio y Belgrano.

On March 9, 2010 the President signed the decree 329, declaring Eva Peron as the “Woman of the Bicentennial,” in the context of the 200th anniversary of the May Revolution.

Thus it was decided to include in the north and south facades of the Ministry of Social Development, two portraits of Evita made with iron structures.

The artists were asked about whether the work could soon become a realistic state art, like the socialist realism of the USSR that had a clear objective of ideological indoctrination through art, to which Santoro said, “The work I’ve done with AlejandroMarmo is something else. It is realistic, obviously, but is in anchoring an urban icon. Evita, as well as the Che Guevara is an icon of universal value. She transcends Marmo and I. We wanted the picture to reflect such an urban icon of Buenos Aires. It has to be also a tourist picture”.

The ceremony will start at 8.25 pm, the time when Evita died on July 26, 1952.

July 9th Avenue was now completely cut off the traffic way south from Avenida Corrientes to Chile Street.

A photographic study of the so-called water dragons reveals the great beauty of these particular animals that inhabit the warm waters of southern Australia, although some specimens have been found in Tasmania.

Dr. Keith Martin-Smith of the University of Tasmania led the project which was published and the journal of Fish Biology.

The bodies of the dragons are made of beautiful patterns of dots and spots that help them blend into their environment and avoid predators.

The research team observed that males may carry eggs in the spongy tissue located under their tails and it is presumed that the young hatch in the cooler waters of Tasmania.

The International Center of Photography in New York presents the exhibition entitled “Hiroshima: Ground Zero 1945″, a selection of at least 60 powerful images of the city that was hit by one of the atomic bombs dropped by U.S. in World War II .

The photographs had never being shown so far and incredibly this is happening in a very particular context, taking into account the nuclear disaster in Japan after the earthquake and tsunami of March.

The U.S. government had given clear instructions about the ban on publishing pictures of Hiroshima a month after the bomb, “in order to not disturb the public.”

The nuclear weapon led to the death of 140,000 people in a few seconds and destroyed 70% of the city’s physical structures.

Dear Friends

A few hours ago my father died. I know you all share the sadness we feel in the family. Because my father did not only belong to us. With pride, with joy, we know that we share with many people who wanted and needed him as much as we do. From five in the afternoon, we will dismiss him as he ever wanted, in the club in his neighborhood, Defensores de Santos Lugares.

This morning, the Argentine writer Ernesto Sabato died due to a strong by strong bronchitis.

His remains will be veiled in the first floor of Club Defensores de Santos Lugares, in Greater Buenos Aires.

The writer, essayist, physicist and Argentine painter, was born in the locality of Rojas, 24 June of 1911 and wrote three novels: In 1948, the tunne,l in 1961, On Heroes and Tombs and in 1974, Abaddon the destroyer.

He completed his primary studies in his hometown, conducted his high school at the National College of La Plata, and then entered the Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata.

He was a member of the University Reform movement.

In 1934, when the Communist Party found the writer doubts that ideology and the dictatorship of Joseph Stalin, I sent for two years at the Lenin School in Moscow, where, according to Sabato: “It was a place where one is healed or ended in a gulag or a psychiatric hospital. “

In 1936 he married Matilde Kusminsky Richter.

In 1995, Sabato wrote: “may seem like a horrible act of snobbery that three fundamental crisis of my life happened in Paris, but actually it was. The first occurred in the winter of 1935, when I was a boy of 24 years. I was committed to the Communist Youth, when the dictatorship of General Uriburu. I left school, family and my bourgeois comforts. I lived under an assumed name in La Plata, in whose suburbs were the two largest industries of the nation, which ruthlessly exploited to all sorts of immigrants living in crowded slums of zinc, surrounded by putrid waters swamps. I participated in the organization of strikes”.

“When I had started my doubts about Stalinism, I decided to go to Lenin’s School in Moscow, to purify me. If I had left, I would never live again. I had to pass through Brussels for a conference against fascism and I knew with horrific the details of the ‘processes’ of Moscow.

I escaped to Paris, I lived a very hard winter in the little room of a fellow dissident. I got back to La Plata, where I continued my career in physics and mathematics. When I finished I got a bourse to work in the Curie laboratory, where I worked for almost a year and there in Paris, attended the breakdown of uranium atom, which fought three laboratories.

I thought it was the beginning of Armageddon. I lived in horrible confusion, as I wrote my first novel and I made the shame of letting Matilda returned to Argentina with our first child, a few months while I had a Russian mistress. The third crisis was the result of all this, and my relationship with the Surrealists: Domínguez, Matta, Wifredo Lam and others.

During the celebration people are barred from consuming foods derived from cereals (wheat, barley, rye, oats and buckwheat) fermented, called chametz (חמץ), which according to history ‘the Jewish people left Egypt so quickly that failed to prepare and had no time to let rise the bread for the road, and therefore it was born the prohibition of eating chametz.”

They have the habit of eating Matzah (מצה), or unleavened bread. During the first night of the festival, the first two in the Diaspora tend to perform a traditional dinner, called “Seder” (סדר) during the same they relates the story of the Exodus from Egypt.

This holiday is also called Spring Festival, because at this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere this season starts and hot weather in Israel is the dry season, which after Passover and Sukkot are accustomed to pray for dew, not rain.

Rabbi Gustavo Kraselnik said “Passover is the story of the mission entrusted by God to Moses and Aaron, his brother, the saga of the stubborn impediment of Pharaoh’s story of the eternal punishment that made him change his opinion to the king of the Nile; and the memory of the exodus of the Israelites into the Promised Land. All this crystallized the Jewish national identity and marked its genesis as a free people, experience and foundation giving to the most important concepts of Judaism and its tradition.”

City of Buenos Aires, March 22, 2011

After the struggle between the workers in the Teatro Colón and the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, the members of the Permanent Orchestra decided to accompany the tenor Placido Domingo only in his concert in the Obelisk.

Far from being a “scandal”, as certain media calls the incident, there is a discussion of the problem between a free show for all, or one exclusive one for those who can pay the ticket of the Colon. The only certainty was that the Spanish concerts were in doubt.

Finally, the culture minister, Hernán Lombardi, said: “The concert on July 9 will take place, and the one in the Teatro Colon is canceled. We did solve the conflict, but we opened a positiveparenthesis.”

Meanwhile, Max Parpagnoli, representing the workers of the theater, said: “What the minister says Lombardi is your responsibility, the official about what will happen is going to tell the master Plácido Domingo today at 21.”

Andy Warhol self-portrait was auctioned in London for $ 17 million. The auction house Christie’s expected less than half.

A private collector had it in his power since 1974. The table has two square meters and was acquired by a New York gallery whose owner identity was not revealed.

Warhol’s work, one of the most influential of contemporary painting, includes eleven self-portraits. Five of them are scattered in museums of different countries and eight were part of the artist’s retrospective devoted to the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1989, two years after his death.

Warhol self-portraits are, along with the can of Campbell’s soup and Marilyn Monroe images, the most popular paintings of the artist.

UK, February 17, 2011.- British scientists discovered that the inhabitants of the European island used the skulls of their victims as drinking bowls.

The discovery was based on the remains of three people, whose bones dating back 14,700 years ago, at the end of the last glaciations, in a cave in Cheddar Gorge in Somerset County (southwest England).

Although the remains were already known by scientists at the Natural History Museum in London, a detailed study with a 3D microscope of 37 skull fragments and four pieces of jaw, revealed a common pattern: the bones had been carefully worked to become in drinking vessels.

The bones show signs of a detailed work on trying to extract the maximum possible amount of meat, which shows the cannibal behavior of this primitive tribe, who did not discriminate anyone, as part of the remains belong to a child of three years old. Then, they used stone tools to work and transform the skulls in these claims containers.

People of the Cheddar Gorge cave scalped skulls, removed the eyes and ears, ironed out the features of faces, gave off the jaws and chiseled edges. They earried out a very thorough job,” Professor Stringer explains, one of the authors.

The medical tool that seems to us very modern and usual was already used in the Ancient Egypt. The Egyptologist Finch managed to prove this as she found two artificial big toes in a 2.600 years old mummy at the Egyptian Museum of El Cairo.

According to the investigator, the Egyptians used prosthesis since 600 BC for those who had had amputated limbs.

Spain, February 13, 2011

Editorial La Marca published the book “Che, the star of a revolutionary”. With texts of Editorial Marea, Constanza Brunet and Guido Indij, it is the first educational book on the man who freed Cuba from the pro-USA government.

Indij sadi: “We decided to take out a collection of books on historical men for children. What better man to start than Che Guevara”.

In Argentina there already is a controversy. It is for sure that a book on a socialist freedom fighter would not receive flowers and 5 stars from certain groups. That is why the discussion is set on whether to give use this book for Primary Education or not.

“It’s a bit revolutionary this book, and many parents and people will judge it, but those who read and understand its message will understand it”, Indij explained.

The book is authorized to be used on primary schools in Spain.

London, January 7, 2011.- An important auction will take place in England, around a masterpiece of French artist Paul Gauguin.

Responsible for carrying out this event is the auction house Christie’s, whose spokesman said that it is expected the paint to reach U.S. $ 15.4 million.

It’s “Nature morte à ‘L’Esperance’” (Still Life with “The Hope “), a painting of sunflowers as part of a series of four works that the French artist held in honor to his friend Vincent Van Gogh.

The work, which had not been seen in public since 1989, was made in 1901 while the painter lived in Tahiti, shortly before his death.

According to EFE, the director and head of Impressionist and Modern Art at Christie’s Giovanna Bertazzoni said that last year the collectors market from China and Russia have bid up to record sales figures in this house.

“The auctions in February of this year Christie’s will offer a significantly higher number of Impressionist works that have remained in private hands for decades”, she said.

DSW: The world’s population hits 6,900 million http://m24digital.com/en/2010/12/28/dsw-the-worlds-population-hits-6900-million/ http://m24digital.com/en/2010/12/28/dsw-the-worlds-population-hits-6900-million/#comments Tue, 28 Dec 2010 23:44:04 +0000 RedactorA http://momento24.com/en/?p=99883

Germany, December 28, 2010

The German Foundation for World Population (DSW) informs that the world population will hit this year 6,900 million people, about 80 million more than in 2009.

The same report released today in Hannover by German experts predicted that the number will reach 7,000 million by mid-2011.

DSW said that 2.6 children are born per second in the world. Most of them take place in emerging countries, which accounts the 82% of the total world population.

Africa is currently the continent with the highest population growth. It is estimated that over the next forty years their population of 1000 million people will double to 2000 million.

Currently, about half of the inhabitants of this continent don’t cover basic needs, which means that population growth will go hand in hand with an unstoppable increase in poverty.

For that reason, the DSW calls to promote family planning and sex education in African countries.
