Chile: Fire out of control in the hills of Valparaíso
The president of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, last night signed a decree declaring a state of emergency and disaster areas of Valparaiso, hit by a fire of huge dimensions that has already destroyed about 150 homes and forced the evacuation of about 600 people.
The severity of fires affecting the hills in Valparaiso made President Bachelet signed the Emergency Decree on State Constitutional Catastrophe for the Chilean Navy to take control of security in the area.
The Head of the First Naval Zone Julio Leiva will take command of the city and its troops are responsible for security so with the collaboration of the Army through the effective Maipo Regiment.
One of her first acts was to order the closing today of nightclubs and “Prohibition” throughout the city so that the sale of alcohol is banned.
Interior Minister Rodrigo Peñailillo reported after the meeting of the emergency committee that approximately 270 acres have been consumed by the flames and confirmed that more than 100 homes have been destroyed.
