The trial for the deaths of December 20 of 2001 began

This morning, the Federal Oral Court No. 6 began with the public trial against the accused by the five deaths and 117 injured in protests on 20 December 2001. The same occurred in Plaza de Mayo and other streets. There will declare more than 500 witnesses.

The Court is composed of the judges José Valentín Martínez Sobrino, Javier Anzoategui, Rodrigo Gimenez Uriburu and Adrian Martin. The process began with the reading of the accusations and complaints.

The main suspects are the former Security Secretary Enrique Mathov and former head of the Federal Police Commissioner Ruben Santos.

One witness is former President Fernando De la Rua, who will declare after the request of the prosecution. There is still pending an appeal to the Supreme Court for the agency headed by Lorenzetti, to define its position after being dismissed.

Among those present at the trial are a group Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, Buenos Aires legislature Pablo Ferreyra, Luis D’ Elia and Horacio Verbitsky, head of the Center for Legal and Social Studies (CELS) , head of the complaint is against the principal defendants. The trial will last at least two years, including the statements of 500 witnesses.
