Controversial phrase from Vatican next number two on the marriage of priests
Monsignor Pietro Parolin, who from October will be the number two in the Vatican, issued a statement about the celibacy of priests reviving the debate on the marriage within the Church without vocations and pending decisions of Pope Francis, although there are many who believe that still dominate the arguments against.
The nuncio said in Venezuela, “Celibacy is not a dogma and we can argue about it because it is a church tradition.”
That phrase caused a media frenzy, but according to experts “Parolin words do not say anything new.”
“Certainly it is not a dogma”, had said in 1997 in the book ‘The Salt of the Earth’ then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger headed the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
Francis Pope did not refer to any change in the status of priests and not talked about it in the interview broadcast Thursday Jesuit magazine, since he was elected in March.
Francis asked the priests who “live their spiritual fruitfulness surrendering completely to the mission of evangelization.”
