Ban Ki-Moon: “Chemical weapons are a violation of international law”
September 14, 2013
The UN secretary general, Ban Ki-Moon said “if scientific analysis confirmed that chemical weapons were used, that would be a serious violation, an abominable violation of international law” to an interview to a French channel.
“I think the international community should take firm and necessary measures to do what is necessary in order that such a crime won’t be done anymore, and to bring the perpetrators to justice,” he added.
On the other hand, he said “if chemical weapons are use by anybody, no matter what circumstances or for what reason, they must be condemned and brought to justice.”
In relation to the acceptance of the Syrian government to dismantle its chemical weapons under international supervision, the UN official argued that “it is important to fulfill its promise in a sincere and correct way.”
“I think the report will be a damning report that chemical weapons were used but I cannot say publicly at this time until I get it,” he said.
