Nextel leaves Argentina
Argentina, August 25, 2013
Despite not having gained public notoriety, Nextel Argentina is on sale since last Thursday. “They got tired, they cannot give 3G service and they not allow them to grow, they can’t turn profits. They are leaving” he said at the Hotel Alvear one of those attending the conclave of businessmen and politicians.
The main reason is that Nextel Argentina has no frequencies to deliver 3G service that do have their competitors (Movistar, Personal and Claro) in the 850 and 1900 MHz.
The Argentine government auctioned frequencies formerly used by Unifón, but eventually gave them to the state the Arsat for the development of a new public company to be called Libre Ar.
“It’s a shame, acknowledged the source consulted, because Nextel now has the frequency of 800 MHz for LTE and could be offering a very high speed web browsing, video streaming, VoIP, online games, but they said no” official sources said.
