Uruguay President José “Pepe” Mujica decided not to attend the opening Mass of the Francis papacy, because it is absolutely secular.

“We are not believers, and as Vice President (Danilo Astori) it is we considered more appropriate to the Vice President to travel, this has much to do with faith,” Uruguay’s first lady Lucia Topolansky said.

She also warned that “Uruguay is a country absolutely secular, the Church is separated from the state since the beginning of last century, and it has a certain differential the rest of Latin America”.

Topolansky clarified that “I have enormous respect for the Catholic religion, as well as other religions” but insisted she and Mujica are not believers and that “this country is particularly secular”.
