U.S. president Barack Obama asked the Supreme Court to ‘declare unconstitutional the Defense of Marriage Act, which vetoes the marriage between same sex people’.
Obama becomes the first U.S. president to support gay marriage before the highest court in the land.
According to Obama: “This law violates fundamental constitutional guarantees of equal protection. The law denies tens of thousands of same-sex couples who are legally married under state law (nine in total) an assortment of important federal benefits that are available to legally married couples of the opposite sex. “
Republicans defended the authority of Congress to limit the benefits for homosexual couples.
