Corinthians was banned from selling tickets to its fans

Brazil, February 22, 2013

On Wednesday, in the match between the last champion of the Libertadores, Corinthians and San José from Bolivia, a fan of the Brazilian team fired a flare that hit a fan of the Bolivian team, killing him instantly.

After the tragedy, CONMEBOL announced the punishment that would be applied to the Brazilian club. This was the statement of the organization:

The Disciplinary Unit of the Disciplinary Tribunal of the Conmebol initiated a case to SC Corinthians of Brazil for the incidents on Wednesday February 20 in the game against San Jose from Bolivia for the Copa Libertadores 2013.

At the same time, adopted two measures as a precautionary measure (until a decision on the case, and for a maximum of 60 days):

1. All parties that Corinthians plays at its home in the Libertadores 2013 must be with closed doors.

2. Clubs that face Corinthians in the tournament are prohibited from selling or giving tickets for Corinthians or its followers.

For its part, the leadership of the Corinthians said they will appeal the “unjust” sanction of CONMEBOL.

“The move affects not only the club but mainly to the 80,000 fans who forfeited, and purchased the tickets, and they do not deserve such punishment,” said the club through a statement.
