Pope Benedict XVI was greeted with applause and cheers in his first public appearance after the announcement of his resignation, in the Paul VI Hall on his traditional Wednesday audience coinciding with Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.
Attendees waved small flags of the Vatican and others engaged him a long applause.
His presence, to be one of his last religious celebrations as Pope, is to begin with the arrival of Lent on Ash Wednesday at the Basilica of St. Peter.
Pope Benedict XVI said during the religious ceremony, renouncing the papacy ‘in freedom for the good of the Church’.
When finished Lent it is expected to have a new Pope.
