A landslided of mud and rocks blocked the National Route 7

Argentina, February 7 , 2013

Today, the national route 7 was cut by an avalanche of mud and rocks that blocked it. The route from Mendoza to Chile was interrupted and it is estimated that about 400 vehicles were stranded near the town of Uspallata, according to Gendarmerie and National Highways.

The landslide is the third of the year that occurs in the area due to heavy rains. Landslides occurred at 4 am in the morning, in Picheuta, a few miles from Uspallata. Thus, the route was cut off and the communication with Chile through the Cristo Redentor remains blocked.

The head of the National Highway fourth district, Miguel Rivas, said that “we are working with large machines and bulldozers and concluded “if necessary we’ll take a backhoe to the zone”.
