Ivory Coast: A stampede left more than 60 dead in New Year celebrations

According to the official agency AIP, “More than 60 people died and 200 remain injured in a stampede that took place after midnight at a stadium in Abidjan when celebrating the New Year”.

The site also clarifies that “the victims are children aged 8 to 15 who had attended the show held at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny stadium in the Plateau business district, and they were hit by a stampede in the vicinity “.

“Emergency crews and firefighters rushed to the scene ‘hours after the drama’ they could not save their lives.”
