“Mrs Cano”, Caetano Veloso’s mother, passed away

Today, Claudionor Viana Teles Velloso, known as “Mrs. Cano” and mother of Brazilian musicians Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethania, died at the age of 105 at her home in the city of Santo Amaro da Purificación, according to her family members.

She was born on September 16, 1907 and had eight children with her husband José Teles Velloso, who died in 1983. Two of them, Caetano and Maria Bethania, brought fame to her family inside and outside Brazil.

Among some who spoke of her death is the former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who said “Mrs. Cano was a reference to wisdom and generosity” and he gave a “salute of solidarity” to all her relatives.

Two weeks ago she had suffered a cerebral ischemia, thus remained hospitalized for six days and was discharged from hospital on Friday.

Sources from the hospital where she was held said “she spent Christmas Eve with all his children and died during the morning, also in their company.
