INDEC: 13 pesos per day are needed ‘to avoid being poor’

Argentina, September 24, 2012

According to the state agency INDEC-’13 pesos is what it takes for people to eat, travel, dress, study for a day ‘.

The new data is referenced to set the poverty line: in August was 1555 pesos monthly, ‘transferred to a typical family, married with two children, and divided by 30 days, resulting in a total of 52 pesos per family per day or 13 pesos per person ‘.

According to the agency that amount is needed to ‘stop being poor enough to eat, dress, travel, pay rent, the cost of housing, health, education, leisure and activity’.

But reportedly private and some provinces, ‘the poverty line is at around 3600 pesos or 30 pesos per day per person’.

For Ana Edwin, director of INDEC, ‘the reality is that these figures are used to set values of subsidies and social programs, among other things.’
