Uruguay will sell dollars to Argentines to promote tourism in their country

Uruguay, September 5, 2012

In Uruguay, tourism entrepreneurs met with government officials seeking to attract the attention of Argentine tourists selling “a million dollars” in the form of vouchers to redeem them for prizes and discounts. The measure aims to counteract the restrictions to the purchase of dollars imposed by the Argentine government.

The head of the Uruguayan Association of Travel Agents (Audavi), Sergio Bañales, said that they are planning to sell “1.5 million dollars to encourage Argentine tourists”.

“This project is not finished yet,” he said, and added “We have to define various implementation details, such as which vouchers will be given to tourist. It is a promotion that will be done by Audavi for Argentines”.

For now, the Uruguayan government is working with secrecy on a series of measures to promote tourism in its country, although it was known that there were meetings between the Ministry of Tourism, Economy and there are even more meetings planned for next week.

“We are working. We are not going to announce any agreement or measure yet, but as soon as we have them, we will make them known” said Antonio Carámbula, Undersecretary of Tourism.
