The president of the local legislature Gavin Short reported that islanders will hold a referendum in 2013 to demonstrate how sure they are about their identity and the future they want.
“We hope that the referendum is a strong message to President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner to the fact that the islanders want to remain British,” the statement said.
It adds: “We welcome this referendum not because we have doubt who we are and what future we want, but to show the world how confident we are about it.”
British Prime Minister David Cameron said after the announcement of the referendum that he will respect the outcome.
