Newsweek magazine published a controversial cover of its next issue, which shows a photo of U.S. President Barack Obama, with a rainbow halo, and the title: “The first gay president.”
The cover comes after the president’s statements in favor of equal marriage (see note).
Tina Brown, who edits the magazine and the website The Daily Beast, is known for her love of controversial covers to help stimulate public interest and sales.
The article that accompanies this issue was written by the magazine blogger Andrew Sullivan, who is a gay conservative policy expert.
“When you walk around back and assesses Obama’s record on gay rights, is, in fact, that this was not an aberration. It was an inevitable culmination of three years of work,” Sullivan said about the article.
“He had to discover his ‘black identity’ and then reconciled with his white family, like homosexuals discover their homosexual identity and then have to reconcile with their heterosexual family,” the writer described regarding the similarities between Obama and the gay community.
