The Russian weather satellite Electro-L took this photograph of the Earth, becoming the highest resolution so far with 121 megapixels.

The image was captured with a single shot and for that it was needed a camera with a resolution of 1 kilometer per pixel for the visible and 4 km for the infrared spectrum.

Electro-L is in a geostationary orbit, which means that its speed matches the rotation of the Earth, so it remains “stationary” above a fixed point on the planet.

It was launched in January 2011 and has had the intention of lowering these stunning images ever since.

Images of Electro-L also been collated for a “time-lapse” video of the Earth, showing us the dance of the clouds as the planet moves through space.
