Legal abortion will be discussed again in the Chamber of Deputies

Argentina, March 16, 2012

Sources from the Parliament said that the block of deputies of Nuevo Encuentro, led by Martin Sabatella, will present again the project providing “access to safe and free abortion” but with modifications to what was discussed in 2010.

The project aims to “guarantee all women the necessary conditions for abortion,” said the leader of Nuevo Encuentro.

“Over a thousand women undergo unsafe abortions every day in situations of extreme vulnerability to health. And that situation is vastly worse in those with fewer resources who can not pay a safe intervention” he added.

Abortion would be able “during the first 14 weeks of pregnancy and regardless of the time if there is danger to the life or physical, mental or social health of the woman.”

Also, when pregnancy comes from a violation, women will be able to do it up to 23 weeks of gestation.

On the other hand, it does not allow abortion when the fetus is viable outside the woman’s body and specifies that health officials or judicial ones that may delay or prevent the woman’s decision to terminate her pregnancy can be punished.

Finally, Sabatella remarked, “We want to give a deep and serious discusión about abortion, to ensure that the State takes care to ensure the right to health for all women. In Argentine’s society there is broad consensus regarding the need to discuss this issue.”
