Roger Waters: “The Falklands are Argentine”

Argentina, February 28, 2012

Roger Waters, former leader of the band Pink Floyd, dedicated a few words to the conflict between Britain and Argentina over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands before his arrival to the South American country.

“The Malvinas are Argentine” said the English musician, adding “the war of 1982 saved the political career of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, but killed many British and Argentine people”.

Waters, who will offer nine shows in Argentina at the River Plate Stadium, said in statements to the Chilean press that the Falklands (Malvinas) are Argentine and that the war saved the political career of Margaret Thatcher.

The content of the interview was not released yet, although there could be learned these statements through the Twitter account of the journalist Amaro Gomez-Pablos, his interviewer.

Roger Waters will play next weekend in Santiago de Chile, as his shows in Buenos Aires are scheduled between 7 and 20 of March.

    Sorry Rog…,
You’re my hero, but I don’t think I agree with you on this one. It’s 1,180 from Argentina, …that’s a big distance, and the people have been living there for many generations, …since 1833. They want unanimously to remain British. It would be really horrible if Argentina came in and forced them out, and not necessary. When Europeans first came to the islands there was no one living on them.

      1,180 miles that is…

    • False. In 1833 there were Argentine colonists living in the islands. They were forced out, which is something Argentina has no intention of doing with the kelpers. How about the distance from the UK? Don’t know in miles… but in kilometers it is over 13.000 km away from London.

  2. Fuck all that we’ve got to get on with these
Got to compete with the wily Japanese.
No need to worry about the Vietnamese.
Got to bring the Russian Bear to his knees.
Well, maybe not the Russian Bear
    Maybe the Swedes.
    We showed Argentina
Now let’s go and show these.
    Make us feel tough
    And wouldn’t Maggie be pleased?
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah!

His own lyrics from the Floyd album ‘The final cut’, check out line seven. The man is a money grabbing coward and wants to keep them on side so he can get more money from the ticket buyers and he is scared to say what he really feels about Argentina. Over to you Roger, explain this away.

  3. Thank you, Roger, for these well-considered and balanced words. I am sure they will not in any way inflame the international situation, nor will they upset the British people of the Falkland Islands; and I am sure they will enhance your reputation as a student of British history and a reliable political commentator.

And if you don’t know sarcasm when you read it, perhaps you should just stick to plugging your faded musical career in unstable South American dictatorships. Oh, wait, you are.

  4. He’s right. Falklands are argentine

  5. Pink Floyd, one of my favourite groups however if this news report is true, stand by Mr Roger Waters, your name will be s*** with the 3000 British Falkland Islanders and veterans like myself, if this is your view then may I suggest you stay out of our country and remain in South America with those you support. The Falkland Islands are British and will remain so untill they decide otherwise. Remember the lyrics in the ‘Final Cut’ album……..’ Galttieri TOOK the Union Jack’, did you have anything to do with that album, erm, yes, I think you did you turncoat ! I do hope that this news report is rubbish.
