Brazil: The leader surrendered but the protests continue
Brazil, February 10, 2012
Last night, police and firefighters gathered in Cinelandia, central plaza of Rio, where they decided to suspend their activities for a 39% wage increase scheduled for October 2013.
The strike adds to that initiated by the police of the state of Bahia. Public Security Secretary of Rio, Jose Mariano Beltrame, had stated that “it was guaranteed the safety of the carnival” but the strike continues on both Bahía and Rio.
While strike leaders surrendered against the security forces, the complaint remains unresolved since the body of soldiers refused to accept the conditions of wage increase proposed by local authorities.
Among those who surrendered are Marco Prisco, leader of the protests, and another leader named Antonio Paulo Angeline, according to Army Chief of Communications Lt. Col. Marcio Cunha.
Despite the surrender of the leaders, the strike will continue as decided by the participants in the assembly, however, have expressed their intention to negotiate with the regional government.
