San Juan Governor José Luis Gioja compared environmentalists protesting for Famatina mining projects, with the Nazis.
“Hitler preferred the blond lady dog than a man living on the sidewalk under a tree, and had nothing to eat, because that person was not important to him,” said the governor on radio La Red
He added: “I think there is some overlap [between the Nazis and environmentalists]. They’re not as extreme as the Nazis but there are coincidences as they not to leave any possibilities … There are many who like to come to see poverty. I like to fight against it.”
“There are many people who criticize, and have gold teeth and gold rings,” Gioia said. “From the outside it’s very nice to criticize this. Some do not like to touch a hill, but it is a millionth of a limited extent what is touched.”
Currently there is much resistance for open pit mining projects, as activists say harm the environment and essential resources like water.
In the province of San Juan, there are three projects currently and Gioja justified them ensuring that represent at least 11 000 jobs.
