David Nalbandian was defeated by American John Isner 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (5) and 10-8, while Juan Martin Del Potro beat Blaz Kavcic 6-4, 7 – 5 and 6-3 in the first Grand Slam of the season.
Nalbandian was very upset at the Australia Open after an intense game of 4 hours and 41 minutes, by the decision of a judge, who didn’t allow the “hawk eye” on a ball that was good for Isner.
The judge said Nalbandian had already spent much time for Hawkeye, the electronic system to determine exactly where the ball fell, and that sparked the fury of the Argentine player.
“It’s ridiculous this kind of tournament play with this kind of judges. What is it, what ATP is doing? I do not understand it in that situation, 8-8 and break point. Can you be so stupid to do something then?” Nlabandian said.
However when the player was calmer acknowledged his defeat did not rely entirely on that point, but highlighted the difficult situation that happened.
For his part, Del Potro had a tough match but found victory and his next opponent will be Yen-Hsun Lu of Taipei.
