Buenos Aires government announced that starting this Friday, the subway ticket will cost $ 2.50, an increase of 125%, following an agreement reached with the national government regarding the transfer of this massive public transportation to the area of Mauricio Macri administration.

Buenos Aires Underground State Society (SBAS) reported that, “The decision was made to recover the severe backlog accumulating rate.”

“The subway ticket increased 57 percent between 2001 and 2011, super gasoline prices rose to 360 per cent: milk, 496 percent, and wages according to INDEC, 398 percent,” the statement.

Buenos Aires Finance Minister Nestor Grindetti said, “This is a decision needed to ensure the provision of service.”

“We did all the analysis and, as we have no resources in the budget, we conclude that this is the best way to ensure the service until Legislature begins to work,” he added.

“Lack of planning and investment, particularly in the last 10 years, generated as a result of poor service, a network too small cars almost 100 years old, saturated lines and citizens who suffer daily insecurity of the system,” he added.
