The dramatic story of the young boy who escaped from the tragic accident of Luján

Argentina, September 3, 2011

Axel Mendoza, the young of 14 years old, who is one of the players of the club’s youth team Barracas, very distressed, said to a Buenos Aires newspaper, how he escaped from the tragic accident that occurred on Saturday in the locality of Luján.

“I still cannot believe what happened, they were really good people and did not deserve this. Nico (Figueroa) and Gabriel (Romero) were my best friends and I always traveled with them near the bottom of the group. Moreover, we use to share the dream of becoming first division players together; we struggled a lot for that. Figueroa was always the first to arrive and the last to leave the trainings and matches, because he was an excellent companion and was encouraging all divisions. They were very loved by everyone”.

“I fell asleep. The previous night I was feeling bad and did not know if I would play, anyway I put the alarm clock, which finally did not ring. Do not ask me why. The truth is that I woke up and asked my dad to take me to Flandria because it was late and a friend was guiding me with text messages. We were a few miles behind the bus when I was notified of the accident, which was so terrible to meet: Nicholas was below the wheel and Gabriel broke his skull. I hope to overcome this, but I find it hard when I think that if I would have traveled with them, I would surely have had suffered the same end. The truth is I fell asleep and I am alive”.
