The UCR ratified Alfonsin: “If the scenario of August 14 repeats, it would be terrible for the country”

City of Buenos Aires, August 18, 2011

The president of the National Committee of the Radical Civic Union (UCR), Ernesto Sanz, convened a meeting with legislative leaders of the Senate and the House of Representatives, Gerardo Morales and Ricardo Gil Lavedra, respectively. They defined how to face the electoral tactics for October, supporting Ricardo Alfonsin.

Alfonsin said he will compete

The presidential candidate of the UCR and UDESO did not participate the meeting, and said that he will not lower his candidacy to support a single opposition candidate.

“There are things you can not ask, I have a great responsibility for the people who voted for me and I don’t act just because of results” he said, referring to the request made by some members of the PRO.

“I will continue to represent the 50% who did not vote the government,” although “it is not an easy task.” ”A change of government would had been good for the country, [but] the next 4 or 5 years of history will tell if they [the voters] were right or not.”

The press conference

We are the institutional expression of radicalism. Like all political forces, we have been making political assessments of the elections and our mission to Oct. 23.

Radicalism is a national party, and claims its status in light of the election results, the condition of having representation in all districts of the country to compete in all local listings. There are only two political forces that have genuine representation, the ruling party and us.

We will compete in October 23 with a project, with a formula that is that of  Ricardo Alfonsin and Javier González Fraga.

If the results of the elections repeat, we would be facing a serious constitutional threat, which happens when the government has the majority in both chambers. We put emphasis on saying that this is at stake.
