Mujica will allow investigations on the crimes of the dictatorship in Uruguay

Uruguay, June 27, 2011

The President of Uruguay, Jose “Pepe” Mujica, signed a decree that declares “illegitimate” all executive actions taken between 1973 and 1985 referred to in Article 3 of the amnesty law, which protects the dictators who occupied the government in that period.

Secretary of the Presidency of Uruguay, Alberto Breccia, announced that “the president has decided [that] makes a decree that revoked on grounds of illegitimacy, all administrative acts issued by the Executive referred to” the Article 3 of the above legislation.

He also said that justice “will require the Executive Branch to report, within the peremptory period of thirty days from receipt of the communication, if it considers the facts of the understanding” in the Law of Cancellation of Punitive Claims of the State.
