10 days away from the deadline for nominations, Cristina still thinks of her vice

City of Buenos Aires, June 13, 2011

The president, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, remains undefined whether she will run for reelection or not. There are those (few) who speculate that the president will suddenly turn the offer down, while for others the discussion is settled and it is time to define the running mate.

Sources indicated to M24Digital that the “catalog” (see related) has undergone some changes.

For starters, as far as “downs” are concerned, the candidacy chances of José Luis Gioja (re-elected in office of Governor of San Juan) and Martin Sabbatella (who had been identified as a possible non-party vice) have been ruled out. Jorge Capitanich was not formally discharged, but his name is no longer mentioned in the Casa Rosada.

Those who are still in the race are Amado Boudou, Minister of Economy, and Juan Manuel Abal Medina, Secretary of Public Communications. Each represents a different profile of management among which Cristina must choose.

Who was also drawn as a possible vice, sources told M24Digital, was the Minister of the Supreme Court, Eugenio Zaffaroni. The lawyer, former radical and with critical support (in some circumstances) to the government would win many swing votes for the president, but there are fears as it may incur on acts of “disloyalty” and no one is seeking to repeat the “Cobos scenario”.
