Ecuador: The “Yes” wins on all questions
Ecuador, May 13, 2011
With more than 75% of the polling stations accounted for, the “yes” leads on the 10 questions voted by the Ecuadorian people on 7 May.
The referendum proposed by President Rafael Correa wins on all its parts for now. The provinces of Guayas, Pichincha (the two most populous) and the counts in Europe, Asia and Oceania, the USA and Canada, and Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa remain to be defined.
The questions that resonate are the one proposing the creation of a Regulatory Board “that regulates the distribution of content on television, radio and print publications that contain messages of violence, sexually explicit or discriminatory, and establish criteria to ultimate responsibility of journalists or media issuers”, and the one which reads: “Do you agree to replace the Plenary Council of the Judiciary by a Technical Committee composed of three representatives appointed, one by the President of the Republic, one by the National Assembly and one by the Transparency and Social Control (…)?”.
Today, Correa reminded the National Assembly that it must vote on legislation resulting from the referendum. “It is an order of Ecuadorians,” he said.
