New train crash leaves 70 injured

April 4, 2011.- Buenos Aires Province Emergency chief Adrian Tarditti confirmed to M24 Digital, “Ferrobaires company locomotive and a passenger train collided this morning at Kilometer 143 of the Highway 2, in Monasterio town, causing 70 injuries.”

He added that “the wounded were treated at Chascomús. None had serious injuries, multiple contusions only. Currently, eight patients are hospitalized.”

Railway sources of Lezama and Castelli said the same media that “the locomotive 335, which left Buenos Aires station Constitution to assist the 336 which was halted by mechanical problems, could not stop the march to arrive at the scene and hit the stopped train.”

The accident occurred before 2:00 am, when the defective train had departed from Mar del Plata at 7:15 pm bound for Constitution station and in Monasterio town had an outbreak of fire in its engine, choked by local firefighters.
