Chávez requested to acelerate the expropriation of lands to landlords

Venezuela, January 9, 2011

Hugo Chavez, Venezuela’s President, today ordered to intensify and accelerate the recovery of fields that are in the hands of “landlords”, south of Lake Maracaibo.

In his TV program “Alo Presidente”, the president had said “the land is for the people, not for the landlords”.

In this way prompted the government to accelerate the recovery of lands.

The region is one of the richest agricultural areas and is located in the west of the country. In December, the government had occupied 47 farms to be delivered to people affected by the heavy rains.

Producers and workers in the affected farms located in the states of Zulia -traditionally ruled by the opposition, and Merida, blocked roads and prevented the passage of the military for several days.

In Venezuela there are just 30 million hectares of arable land.
