The countries of the Mercosur expressed their support to the Argentine claim over the Falklands

Today, countries associated to the Mercosur expressed their “formal protest against the decision of the United Kingdom to carry out military exercises in the Falkland Islands”.

The countries of the region provided their “support for the legitimate rights of Argentina over the islands”.

Besides, the group of South American nations expressed their need to solve the conflicts on the disputed islands, as well as all on maritime space, to reach a solution in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations, Mercosur, the UNASUR, and the Organization of American States.

They also stressed the obligation to “inform the Argentine government on shipping and movement of the Falklands”.

Finally, the statement added that “military exercises violate international conventions and are incompatible with the search for a peaceful solution”.
