On the eve of Halloween, the history of Jure Grando, the first vampire ever
October 30, 2010
Before Dracula reaches the ears of all, there existed already a vampire stalking a village. Jure Grando terrorized the villagers of Istria, Croatia, and his history has earned him recognition as the first European living dead, even before Dracula.
Igor Rajko, employee of the museum dedicated to Grando said: “The neighbors probably shot down and covered the grave for fear of Grando’s return as a vampire to mistreat”
Grando was a peasant who died in 1656, but turned into a terrible human being that rose from the grave and sexually abused his widow, who through writings described how his husband appears, with his mouth full of blood and struggling to breath.
The village priest tried to stop such acts with a crucifix, but couldn’t. The villagers tried to cross his heart with hawthorn stake, but also failed in their mission.
Grando avenged their aggressors, killing them ingesting their blood.
Only in 1672, nine villagers and a priest tried to slay the creature, and after fighting hard, they were able to end the curse.
Boris Peric, Croatian writer, said: “Jure Grando is the oldest vampire documented in Europe, with exact years, name, witnesses and even a description of his character.”
Jure’s figure inspired the horror literature, and his spirit lives today in Dracula.
