Buenos Aires, September 13, 2010

President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner introduced a bill which proposes to include two public holidays during Argentina  Carnival in February.

The initiative includes the creation of the “Day of National Sovereignty” on November 20. In this way, the national holidays would raise 15.

Moreover, the rule sent to the Lower House states that the June 20 will be an immovable holiday, and October 12 will not be “Día de la Raza” (“Columbus Day” or “Day of the races”) and changed to “Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity.”

Meanwhile, the president said that will also include the so-called “holiday bridge”:

“If any of the holidays that are immovable falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday, the executive determines that the day commonly called ‘sandwich’ is also a holiday.”

With this arrangement, Cristina explained how “in 2011, it will be eight long weekends, ten in 2012 and then eight in 2013.”

The project idea will be to encourage domestic tourism.
