Poland´s president died due to a plane crash
Lech Kaczynski, Polish president, died today, when the plane where he was traveling to Western Russia crashed.
According to reports “at least 130 people were on board of the Tupolev 154 and there were no survivors.”
The BBC reported that “the Russian plane burst into flames after impact.”
The plane took off from the Polish capital toward the Russian city of Smolensk, near the border with Belarus.
President Kaczynski was going to lead a delegation that would attend ceremonies marking the 70th anniversary of the slaughter of more than 20 thousand Poles by the secret police of the former Soviet Union during World War II.
According to the BBC “There were on board Kaczynski, his wife Mary, Central Bank Governor and members of the government.”
Lech Kaczynski was elected president in 2005 and had previously been mayor of Warsaw for three years.
The Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, convened in emergency session to his government after the death of President Lech Kaczynski.
According to spokesman from the government, Pawel Grass, Tusk is on the way in Warsaw and in constant communication with the speaker of parliament, Brolislaw Komorowski, who according to the Polish Constitution, will assume the presidency.
