First sex change intervention to a minor in Spain

In the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, Dr Ivan manner and his surgical team performed in December 2009, for the first time in Spain, a sex change operation to a minor.

In November of 2009, a judge approved it after doing on the boy psychiatric studies, which revealed that the operation was the best option.

Dr. Manero said that “it is better to make this intervention before adulthood because the risks that patients are exposed to are less in younger people.”

Clinic staff indicated that “the operation was done in the hospital, but the responsibility was took by the private health company Barnaclínic”.

Dr. Ivan Mañero, stated that “At 13 or 14 years old breasts are small and to prevent its development its required only a minimal intervention” and that “If the person has 18 years old, an amputation of it becomes complex, with many risks and sequels.

And added that “Now transsexualism is being treated and is covered by public health. It represents a big step forward for these people because some years ago they were not considered patients, were considered people who had caprices.”
