England: Comic featuring gay superheroes is launched
A comic book featuring the world’s first gay superhero team has gone on sale.
Spandex follows the exploits of transvestite crimefighter Liberty and Wonder Woman’s lesbian equivalent Diva, as they team up with fellow gay heroes Prowler, Glitter, Indigo and the twins Mr Muscles & Butch in Brighton. Each issue sees them combat villains such as Muscle Mary, Pussy and the Pink Ninjas.
Series creator Martin Eden, who made The O Men, said: “Gay people in comics are fairly under-represented, but this new comic aims to address that. Spandex introduces a whole bunch of fabulous new characters who are set to take the comic world by storm.”
“It’s a fun, experimental comic, full of drama, comedy, romance and action… all done in the best possible taste.”
The first issue introduces the cast and their headquarters in Brighton. The plot sees the team defending their hometown from the ‘Attack of the 50-Foot Lesbian’ and introduces their enemies ‘Les Girlz’.
A 120-page graphic novel is set to be released next year but for now fans will be able to buy Spandex Shorts, a mini series that will be released regularly, which will introduce each character.
