Jose Mujica, a former ‘Tupamaro’ guerrilla is the favorite, as manifested in the polls for presidential elections next Sunday in Uruguay.

Both buses are filled with Uruguayans who live in our country and travel to vote in the presidential elections tomorrow.

The two politicians who aspire to the presidential chair, are  leftist Jose “Pepe” Mujica, 74, a former member of  Tupamaro guerrilla, and right, Luis Alberto Lacalle, 64, who already was president in the early nineties with a conservative policy.

Mujica,is  leading in the polls but perhaps without the needed majority.

According to polls, undecided voters will be key in defining the election.

Uruguayans will vote on two referendums, one to authorize absentee’s voting and another, more controversial, to annul the Amnesty Law, passed in 1986.

The Supreme Court declared unconstitutional the Amnesty Law in the case of a young woman tortured and murdered in 1974.

Mujica who represents the most radical of Frente Amplio  managed to win the primaries against Danilo Astori, later incorporated as a running mate.

Jose Mujica said in a statement that “I am not the apocalypse or the Promised Land,” and that “This is a choice, not a war. Whatever happens, the country will keep going. ”

The current president Tabaré Vázquez, will retire with a high acceptance level , 60%,  next to Brazil’s Lula and Bachelet in Chile, also in the list of Latin American leaders who do run for re  elections and who are more popular than when they arrived in th presidency.

Anyway, if Mujica reaches 51% of the votes or if he gets 45%, as manifested in polls, there will be a ballotage election in late November. In terms of percentages Lacalle, is estimated at 30%.
