Tribute to Michael Jacks at MTV awards ceremony

The MTV Video Music Awards have kicked off on a somber, if musical, note.

Madonna opened the ceremony with a poignant introduction to a tribute to Michael Jackson, who died in June at the age of 50.

Madonna told the crowd that “sometimes, we have to lose things before we can truly appreciate them.” She ended her remarks about the King of Pop by declaring, “Long live the king.”

A musical number featured Jackson clones, dressed in some of his signature outfits. His sister, Janet Jackson, then came out to re-create the moves from their only video together, “Scream.” Afterward, she looked heavenward and bowed.
