Illegal immigration is now a crime in Italy

Italy’s parliament has given final approval to a law criminalising illegal immigration and allowing citizens’ patrols to help the police keep order.

The new measures have been strongly criticised by human rights groups and the Vatican.

Illegal immigration will be punishable by a hefty fine and those who knowingly house illegal migrants will face up to three years in prison.

The law also extends detention periods for illegal migrants to six months.

It was passed in the Senate (upper house) on Thursday, with 157 in favour and 124 against. The lower house passed it in May.

The unarmed citizens’ patrols are among the most controversial measures.

A right-wing uniformed group called the Italian National Guard was set up last month, likened by some to Benito Mussolini’s Fascists. It vowed to start patrolling the streets.

But Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said the group, which sports beige uniforms and black military-style hats, would not be allowed to mount street patrols.

Mr Maroni, a member of the anti-immigration Northern League, has steered the legislation through parliament.

The party is a key ally of Italy’s right-wing Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, and made tougher measures against immigration a condition of its support for his re-election last year.

The new law makes illegal immigration punishable by a fine of 5,000 to 10,000 euros.

  1. I’m not defending illegal immigration but boy i’ve got to say: that’s some hypocritical bullcrap. this measures are obviously the easy way out. I mean, Italy is one of the countries in the old continent that has sent many of its citizens to countries all over the world. i’ve lived in the US, (legally!) for 7 years and i haven’t seen that over there, even in my country (Brazil) you won’t believe the AMOUNT of Italians decedents residing here, people WHO once needed us and our land and we DIDN’T hesitate to give them an opportunity. I myself have witnessed racism, since all my my family is Italian and they haven’t fitted in quite well with the melting pot wich is my country. I have to admit i ain’t proud of that and thank god to the “tropics hospitality” because if it wasn’t for that, some might want to prosecute them too.

    • Hey Carlo why are you comparing Italians with the filthy third world people who invade our White Countries ,rape ,burn and destroy just about everything?
What the Italian Government is doing is necessary .After all these invaders are not our people and do not belong in Europe.

The reason why many Italians emigrated ,thank God no loner now, was because of political turmoil in Italy and not because of economic need. There was a fascist dictatorship under Mussolini and they just left for other Countries. No need to be in Brazil anymore.

  2. who can apply for the immigration in the new law passed
